Today is a very special day for our daughter, Emily. Today is her Confirmation Day. After today, she will be considered an adult in the eyes of the church. She has chosen the name Joan, as in Joan of Arc. I am so very proud of her.
Em and I have had conversations over the last few years about where she wanted to make her confirmation. The school that was part of our parish closed about 4 years ago. She was given the option of celebrating this milestone with her class at St. Joseph or talking to the director of the RE program at our church, St. Kieran. She chose St. Joseph and her classmates, which is fine with all of us. We also discussed the fact that this was not required to graduate. This had to be a free will choice, by her and her alone. No one was going to force her to do this. She freely chose to become an adult within the church and become responsible for her faith. It warms my heart to know that she can and will make these kinds of decisions on her own.
About 6 months ago, Em and I were discussing who she wanted for her sponsor. It was no surprise to me when she wanted her Godmother to be her sponsor. I told her that I felt it was a great decision. Her Aunt Yaya, my best friend, became Catholic when her son made his first communion. Her faith is different from someone who has grown up in the faith since birth. So talking about faith with her; Em would get a very different perspective that talking to me or Den.
Yaya came over early and helped do Em’s hair. I did her makeup. She looked like a dream and so grown up in her dress. Den is so happy to be able to share another milestone with Em. Just his being here today is a blessing and a miracle.
