A Loose Bridge

September 14, 2016

After we took Em to school, Den and I headed to the clinic for his weekly blood draw. We have found that if we go early in the week, early in the morning, the wait is shorter than any other time. We try to go on the same day each week so the Team knows when to be looking for lab results.

When we were done, we headed to Dr. Bogs’ office. Dr. Bogs is Den’s niece. We all go to her when we have a problem. Den had been having some issues with his bridge. It has become increasingly loose over the last few months. We all felt it was time for it to be fixed or at least looked at. Dr. Bogs took several x-rays of the bridge and the anchor teeth. After she looked at the x-rays, she said that Den needs a new bridge for a full top plate denture. Den really doesn’t want to get another denture. He hates the one he has for his bottom plate. If Den wanted a new bridge, he would need at least 3 teeth pulled. With all of Den’s medical issues, she referred us to the oral surgeon. Den had gone to him before, so we already had a relationship with him.

Before we left, Dr. Bogs told Den to make sure to eat a good meal before his next appointment…he would be there for a few hours. She needed to to a complete exam and take several impressions of his existing upper teeth. She also asked us to check with the LVAD Team about pre-medicating (an antibiotic) for the extractions and if they had any problems with the anesthesia that would be used…it was all local stuff, so I didn’t think there would be any problem.

Den had lots of trouble sleeping last night. I finally talked him into putting on his Bi-Pap mask and turning on the machine around 3AM. He fell asleep almost immediately and slept the rest of the night. Good thing we don’t have anywhere to go today. I went back to bed after I dropped Em off at school. (Thank goodness it was my day off.)

Den’s weight is up to 255. I sent an email to the Team about upping his diuretic. Holly sent me a message to change from the Lasix to Bumex – 2mg twice a day for the next 3 days. She instructed me to call if there was no improvement in Den’s weight or if his legs remained swollen.

Den’s weight is down to 249 today. That is 6 pounds in 24 hours, that is just shy of a gallon of fluid. I let the Team know by email. We all agreed that I would watch his weight, legs and LVAD readout for the next few days to see how much fluid we could get off his system.
